Visit to the Polish-Belarusian border and the „buffer zone” by representatives of the Commissioner for Human Rights
On June 16 and 17, 2025, representatives of the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights visited the area along the Polish-Belarusian border. The visit was attended by Marcin Kusy, Head of the Migrants' and National Minorities' Rights Unit in the Equal Treatment Department, and Maja Balcerzak, a lawyer in the Department.
During the visit, representatives from the Commissioner's Office made unannounced visits to Border Guard stations in Mielnik, Czeremcha, Michałowo and Płaska. They held discussions with the commanders of the Border Guard stations and the officers on duty. Commissioner's Office employees also inspected the barrier on the border with Belarus, located in the restricted area, to familiarise themselves with its practical operation.
The purpose of the visit was to familiarise the Commissioner with the current situation at the Polish-Belarusian border in the context of the applicable regulations restricting the right to apply for international protection on the territory of the Republic of Poland (pursuant to Article 33a(5) of the Act of 13 June 2003 on granting protection to foreigners on the territory of the Republic of Poland, the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 27 March 2025 on the temporary restriction of the right to apply for international protection, and the Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 23 May 2025 on the extension of the temporary restriction of the right to apply for international protection).
