Meeting with delegation of members of the Bundestag

The guests were received by Hanna Machińska, the Deputy of the Commissioner for Human Rights, together with the Director of the Department for Constitutional, International and European Law, Mirosław Wróblewski, and Marcin Sośniak, the Deputy Director of the Department for Equal Treatment.
The delegation of German deputies was chaired by Friedrich Merz, chairman of the CDU / CSU fraction. He was accompanied by:

  • Thomas Bagger, Ambassador of the Republic of Germany to Poland,
  • Patricia Lips, Member of the Bundestag, deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU fraction,
  • Paul Ziemak, member of the Bundestag,
  • Knut Abraham, member of the Bundestag,
  • Jacob Schrot, Chief of Staff of the Chairman of the CDU / CSU fraction.

The main topic of the meeting was the activity of the Commissioner for Human Rights, his competences and the tasks performed.
The Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights presented key problems related to the protection of human rights in Poland, stressing the independence of the functioning of the office of the Commissioner for Human Rights. She emphasized the good cooperation with the German Institute of Human Rights. She also drew attention to the exchange of experiences related to legal regulations and the functioning of the centre for people with dissocial behaviour in Rosdorf, extremely important for the CHR.
The participants of the meeting also exchanged experiences regarding refugee procedures in Poland and Germany. Director Marcin Sośniak presented the situation on the border between Poland and Belarus and Poland with Ukraine, pointing to the huge involvement of civil society in helping refugees.
Director Mirosław Wróblewski presented the problems related to the rule of law in Poland. He discussed selected, current jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights in Polish cases. He also raised the issue of operational control, surveillance and powers of secret services, paying attention to the cases pending before the ECHR.
