Commissioner for Human Rights

On 30 January 2025, Deputy Commissioner for Human Rights Wojciech Brzozowski met with the Director of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) Sirpa Rautio and the Head of the FRA's Justice, Digital and Migration Unit Joanna Goodey.

Participants at the meeting addressed, among other topics, the issue of ill-treatment, particularly in relation to migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. They also discussed the protection of whistleblowers, the situation of the Roma minority, as well as other specific issues within the CHR's remit and the FRA's areas of interest.

The Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) is an EU body tasked with collecting and analysing information on the respect of human rights listed in the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The Agency's objective is to help introduce a fundamental rights culture throughout the EU. In doing so, FRA works with EU institutions, Member States, national human rights institutions, equality bodies and other stakeholders.

Sirpa Rautio has been Director of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights since March 2024. Previously, she was the first Director of the Finnish National Human Rights Institution, the Finnish Human Rights Centre that she established. She served as its Director from March 2012 until February 2024. She was also Chairperson of the European Network of Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) from March 2022 until 2024. She has worked in expert and man9agement positions in international organisations, including the World Bank, the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and the EU. She was a member of the FRA's Management Board from 2015-2020 and Chairperson of the Board from 2017. She has worked on human rights and rule of law both in the field and at the headquarters. She has extensive experience working in post-conflict settings and countries in transition. Trained as a lawyer, she graduated from the University of Turku in Finland.
