Commissioner for Human Rights

The case of the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child concerning the right to early education, free preschool education and post-primary education

Date:

On 10 July 2024, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution establishing an intergovernmental working group on an optional protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the right to early childhood education, free preschool education and free post-primary education.
States, civil society and all interested parties were invited to participate actively and constructively in the work of the UN working group.
The Commissioner for Human Rights is constantly interested in issues related to the implementation of the right to education. The Commissioner continues to identify problems in the field of education that require systemic solutions, including those that should be developed through international cooperation.
The Commissioner, Marcin Wiącek, has asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, to comment on the resolution and indicate whether the government plans to present its position on the proposed legal changes. He also asks whether representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will participate in the working group and to what extent.
